This country will grow when our love for nation will be stronger than that of any other thing, politics or tribe or preference. I won't go the politics way, I'm not as informed as my brother Ken okuyu, maybe he could write a political version of this. Please allow me to make this about arts and the creative industry.
There has been a long debate over the years on 40% Kenyan content on the media. "wasanii wa Kenya huimba ngoma za ujinga" has dominated the debate in a country where a song that goes like " scriii pa pa ku ku ku" tops the charts. It's called man's not hot by big shaq. As a Kenyan am willing to listen to Kenyan crap than Nigerian or South African crap. I'm so Kenyan that I feel bad when these west Africans win international awards. It hurts me when Nigerian artists turn down interviews by local networks because they consider us lowlifes. The truth is, we let them, we are willing to pay 6k for some shitty performance by tekno but would not pay 2k for a Kenyan artist. That is why when Nyashinski gets nominated for an international award, we throw jabs at him. Whether or not ako na maringo we ought to give credits for at least one thing, he's one of us. Kenyans have shaken the world through the internet when trashing akina CNN so if they really wanted to vote that award would have come home.
I hate Nigerian movies. I hate it more when someone talks in a Nigerian accent. How did we get here? The only accent I find sexy is a British accent and a Meru accent. "movie za Kenya hazinanga quality mzuri" has been the phrase here. I'm so Kenyan that I would sit and watch a bad Kenyan movie with a Kenyan story than those bad quality Nigerian movies. Who said they have good quality? The editing is as bad as the acting itself. I like Ezekiel Mutua but he should just do something about the influx of Nigerian movies in Kenya they are as bad to our children as the nudity. So how is playing Nigerian content improving quality back home? Give the film makers the chance to tell a good Kenyan story and they will improve on quality. Believe me I also wouldn't invest a million on a film that won't get the airtime because there's a village girl in Nigeria who's waiting for her Prince Charming in a cliche story that lacks taste. I don't know what and how but this country needs change and fast.
We can trash the media all day but with all honesty it all starts with us, each one of us. How much do you love Kenya? I'm sure everyones answer is they love the country but love isn't about saying you love but really loving. It's about the act not the word. Hapa chini kwa comments niambie what you doing to show your love for nation. How much Kenyan content do you have on your phone, is it 40%? Look at where you are, how many Kenyan products do you see? What are you doing to make a difference? To make Kenya better?
Kenya is all we got.
